It's our First Anniversary!
Woohoo! Upcyclers is one year old! And what a year it's been! We have 1468 members on our team, 1,130 Facebook fans, 815 Twitter followers and 491 followers on our blog!
Wow!
And this is just the beginning! We have big plans for our next year~ and all of the ones to come! We hope you'll stay with us and enjoy the adventure!
As a thanks to all of you~ we are having an amazing giveaway from the Fisher Cat Fiber Co. ~ a handcrafted, upcycled woven plarn rug! Created in the spirit of reducing, reusing and recycling, FCFC products are recycled, scrap, salvaged or earth friendly fibers. Although a wide selection of yarns for knitting and felting are available, Fisher Cat prefers to use wool yarns and fibers from local sheep farmers and spinners. Many of their yarns are hand dyed with local flowers and plants. Plastic bags are woven on a traditional Union rug loom from the 40's that gives the appearance of rag rugs. This 2x3' rug will be a uniquely designed, one of a kind Fisher Cat original!
It's fantastic to imagine these gorgeous rugs are made from plastic bags! Annie uses approximately 80 bags to create a rug this size. That's a lot of bags that won't end up in a landfill. Or worse, floating around aimlessly on the planet waiting to wreak havoc on wildlife! And that's why we are celebrating our anniversary! One year of efforts made by Upcyclers to reduce waste and make the world a little prettier while we're at it!
Now, would you like to know what you have to do to win? Your part is easy~ Annie from Fisher Cat did all the work! All you have to do is enter to win! And you can do that four times for a better chance to win...

Christmas Ornament Re-Carded Matches
The ReGiftables Unique Handmade Gifts Made from Upcycled Gift Cards.
This gorgeous matchbox is made from a recycled gift card and features a hand-painted illustration of a crystal ornament hanging on a Christmas tree against a metallic sky. I can see it paired with a lovely candle making it a great gift for a teacher or friend. Best of all, the matches are eco-friendly, GreenLight™ matches, that are sourced from responsibly managed forests and are the first in the U.S. to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Great work!

Upcycled Gift Wrap Ideas
The upcoming holiday frenzy will be here soon. What are you or your shop doing to get ready? Here at the Wooden Bee, we offer free gift wrap for the holiday season, and I'm in the process of getting my wrapping materials ready. Of course our sustainable shop only offers upcycled, recycled free gift wrapping! Last year we had brown recycled craft paper hand stamped with red and green bumble bees and upcycled ribbon bows. :)
While doing some research for this year's eco-friendly gift wrap, I found some great ideas, and wanted to share them with my Upcycling friends! Most of my ideas can also be found on my Pinterest account, where I found some of them. I also tried to link the images to their clever tutorials when they were available.
Recycled craft paper, brown recycled shipping paper, brown paper grocery bags, and newspaper seem to be popular staples in eco-friendly gift wrap ideas. Here are several ways to decorate the eco-friendly papers:

I found the above idea on Pinterest and then realized it was from one of our Upcyclers shops! We're everywhere. Yay!
Here are some other clever ways of wrapping your gifts, from wrapping a gift with a gift, to using maps, music sheets and discarded vintage materials.
And one more... whatever ecofriendly gift wrapping you use, save your strap pieces and run them through a shredder. They will make lovely stuffing for your gifts, can be used in the place of tissue paper, or used as shipping materials for your packages and orders.
Happy Upcycling...Christmas is only 50 days from now! ;)

Meet & Greet: Glow's Shop
Gloria has a passion for discarded treasures of the past. Intrigued by the history and forgotten memories, she is thrilled by the opportunity to recycle those old trinkets and give them a new life.
I asked Gloria a few questions and here is what she had to share with us today:
Tell us a little about yourself and what you sell.
I have spent my life on a wonderfully winding road... Now, I find my self in Sunny South Florida, surrounded by the sun and the breeze of the sea. I often dream of the kind of winter Miami does not know... but the color and cry of the Peacocks here help that cool-air-longing fade... I am warm here... and happy.
I have always loved the old or otherwise discarded treasures that linger here... still with us. The mysterious history they harbor allures me. I rejoice in random acts of recycling, using those forgotten memories... giving time worn trinkets and cast offs a new shine.
My pieces are soulful and salvage. Many are one of a kind... I make vintage revival Assemblage jewelry... I am proud of the fact that my pieces are eco friendly and I welcome you to come in and find your shine... .
What is your favorite thing about creating?
My favorite thing about creating is that things have a way of becoming what they are meant to be as they are created... All the planning in the world never seems to change that... When some one is touched by a piece I make to make it there own... I know that! That is a blessing I feel.
Why did you decide to work with upcycled/recycled/repurposed/vintage materials?
I never really decided to work with upcycling and repurposing vintage or otherwise cast off things... I just did it... Starting some 30 years ago, from the head band I made of tiny pinecones collected at the park with my boyfriend, to the necklace made of cast off washers t(hat would have been trashed) at a fan factory I worked in while on Kibbutz in Israel, to the jeans I would paint and write poetry on much to my parents chagrin. That was it... at about 15 years old, I was off and running... My pieces were kept to myself and my close inner circle until Etsy came along.
What is your favorite thing about running your etsy shop?
My favorite thing about running my etsy shop is that it gives me the ultimate freedom that I, as an artist, require... I am able to think in peace and create as I feel things... That is PURE JOY!
What inspires you to create/sell what you do?
I am inspired by my life long fascination with the mystery of old things and my not so secret longing for a bohemian life... Their rustic and sometimes dark romance make my creative process thankfully endless...
How do you keep your creative space inspiring?
I find that a huge table full of treasures keeps me quite inspired... Others might call it a mess(and they do!) but to me it is a vision of beauty that allows me to constantly find new combinations and see the ideas that are there... quietly waiting for me.
